Earl Shaffer documented his 1948 Appalachian Trail thru-hike and other adventures with full-color Kodachrome photography, a rarity in the 1940s and especially on long-distance travels. These photographs give an incredible insight into the life of the Appalachian Trail community at the time, as well as wonderful documentation of the history of the Trail through the years.

As well as being part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of American History, Earl's photographs are also featured in a permanent exhibit at the Appalachian Trail Museum.
